I asked my Australian friends how they built a family filled with such happy memories. The answer I got stayed with me and eventually became a part of this poem. "It doesn't suddenly happen overnight, you build it in slow incremental steps"

CHILDHOOD DREAMS
Why was it somewhere along the way, I lost my childhood dreams
Maybe because the path I took, led to commerce and its schemes
Today there is nothing left, of that innocent wide-eyed child
Who'd expected to conquer the world, and who really had tried
With a pure and open heart, and the blind eagerness of youth
To change what was hated into loved, and lies into the truth
I sit now in this tower block, reflecting upon my past
Questioning all those childhood dreams, asking why they did not last
I should be happy but I'm not, for there's nobody to share
The trappings of the rich and famous, which lay around me here
When did I start to think that wealth, and power were everything
Now I realise that joy comes from, a few very simple things
Like family and loving friends, who'll be there until the end
Sharing all life's ups and downs, and giving you the chance to spend
Time building the kind of memories, you won't want to forget
Because they've been put together, in slow incremental steps
If I had my life to live over, I know now what I'd do
To avoid making the same mistakes, I'd hold on tight to you
