Monuments in Stone.gif
Seeing the thousands of headstones in a cemetery in Thailand brought home to me how very young so many of the casualties in World War 2 were.
Reading their headstones in the silence of their final resting place made me realise just how futile it is that we continue sending generations of young men to war.

MONUMENTS IN STONE

Lest we forget we build monuments in stone

A thousand strangers names others loved and known

Battles both won and lost for centuries gone past

With each great war we're promised this will be the last

Mothers are relieved thinking their sons are safe from war

Truth is no one can know what the future has in store

We think a lesson's been learnt from mistakes of the past

History tells another story peace never lasts

So we continue building monuments in stone

Whilst sending Mother's sons to war for reasons unknown

And they simply follow orders of others in command

Who in turn carry out those issued in some far off land

Where silver tongued politicians use their spin like charms

To persuade young men to sally forth and take up lethal arms

So yet another generation's young men march off to war

Just like the many thousands have, all those times before

Proudly with heads held high and their stance erect

Whilst we continue building monuments lest by chance we forget.
