MY YOUTH & TODAYS

Do you remember when we were kids
Days at the seaside the things we did
Sandwiches tasting gritty with sand
Ice cream cones melting over our hands
Playing with buckets and spades for hours
The best sandcastles were always ours
Around them we always dug out moats
Made our lolly sticks into a boat
Drawbridges made from cuttlefish bones
Our names were spelt out in shells and stones

Things are all so different today
When I see the young children at play
Going out in the fresh air's a chore
They'd rather spend time behind closed doors
Their mobile phones and computer games
Is what they live for how things have changed
The kids of today don't have to fear
The old hand me downs passed on each year
For them designer labels will do
We were content with no socks and shoes

Remembering it all makes me sad
Thinking of all the things that we had
Not bought with money yes that is true
But we were not short of things to do
With no TV or video games
Life was still full of fun all the same
From nothing we were able to make
Slides and rides that caused many a scrape
Would I exchange those days of my youth
For their’s today, no way and that's the truth.
