In my younger days I can always remember thinking how strange it was that old people always seemed to want you to know their age. Conversations often started with "Well I am over" whichever one of the big Os birthdays they had reached. Now that I have passed many of the big Os birthdays too I decided to put pen to paper and explain to today's youth that we oldies have probably enjoyed life as much as they have even if they find that hard to believe. Oh and yes I have also found that I have become a member of the "Well I am over" brigade too.

THIS AGE THING

Why when people look at me can they not see past my age
The reason probably is life has reached that certain stage

When the hair goes grey and sadly flesh fills out the body
However that's just on the outside but inside oddly

There's still this youthful woman there who's strong and fighting fit
Not ready for the scrap heap yet so don't throw me on it

The best tunes are always played on the oldest violins
They add a certain something that the new ones cannot bring

It is what's known far and wide as the experienced art
So important when you're dealing with affairs of the heart

So don't scoff at my feelings or think I'm just an old fool
The university of life is where I've been to school

I can take and give love just as well as any other
If they feel they've got to hold back I tell them "don't bother"
Believe me I am going to live my life to the full
Never to grow old is going to be my golden rule

There are still many roads to travel and songs not yet sung
Why should love and happiness be meant only for the young
DEMENTIA BREAKTHROUGH
Although my face nowadays
she does not recognise
And all I see are dull bland looks
from her once bright blue eyes

I have found a way to breakthrough
and bring her back to me
By playing all her favourite songs
and then magically

She remembers who I am and then
just for a short while it's true
She becomes again that same young girl
and wife that I once knew

Who gazed up at me with loving eyes
the day we made our vows
These are the special moments that
get me through the lonely days now.

LADIES OF A CERTAIN AGE
When ladies reach a certain age
Keeping fit becomes the rage
We plunge and lunge at aqua sports
Whilst pilatis is another sort
Combine them with yoga how we try
To trim our waists and firm up our thighs
Some of us know it is just too late
To turn the tide but that is just fate
When we were young they did not exist
Gyms with swimming pools to keep us fit
Then after our classes you will always see
Groups of us chatting drinking coffee or tea.
DOES EXCERCISE DO US GOOD
We are just a group of ladies varying in size
Some want a flatter stomach others svelte like thighs
We try to achieve our goals in many different ways
Some really energetic others more like gentle play
It really doesn't matter what exercise we choose to do
Getting together afterwards does a lot for morale too
We won't achieve the look we once had when young
But that doesn't really matter because trying is such fun
Meeting new people some of whom became good friends
Showed us that exercising does do us good in the end.
